Business Continuity

My business is small, do I need a business continuity solution?

Downtime, loss of revenue and decreased customer trust affects organisations of all sizes. Your business continuity plan is entirely dependent upon the size and needs of your business. There are many different options available to ensure you get the right solution for your business at a price that is affordable for you.

What is the difference between business continuity and disaster recovery?

Business continuity is an overarching plan or framework that includes processes and procedures that will ensure critical and essential functions will continue during a disaster / disruption or downtime. Disaster recovery is an element of this plan and is the organisation’s ability to effectively recover business critical data, applications, networks and services after a failure.

Why is business continuity so important?

A comprehensive business continuity strategy will ensure your organisation can continue to operate during unexpected downtime caused by natural disasters, cyber attacks, network failures or human error. More than that, it can help mitigate some of the risk caused by downtime and protect your revenue, reputation and customer trust.

I’m insured so I don’t need a business continuity solution, do I?

Insurance premiums do not always protect the money you will lose by not being operational. They generally only cover the cost of damage you have incurred initially. Insurance will also not protect the damage you will suffer in terms of customer trust and brand reputation. That’s why it’s vital you have a plan to mitigate that risk and protect your business.

How quickly can I get into a workplace recovery site?

Disasters can strike at any time, which is why Pulsant’s service may be invoked at any time on a 24/7/365 basis. We will respond quickly and our standard SLA for invocation is just four hours, ensuring that disruption to business operations is minimised as far as possible.

How can I be assured my recovery plan will work?

This is where our testing service comes in. Our specialists will support the annual testing regime and, through observation, advise of any remediation recommendations to ensure that invocation plans and the WPR configuration remains fit for purpose.

Is the workplace recovery plan tailored to my business?

Pulsant’s recovery specialists work with you to design the service, assist in development of invocation procedures, and agree the protocols you need to meet the needs of your identified workplace recovery scenarios.

Why is data centre failover so important?

This element of business continuity is important because of user expectations. Online users expect fast and reliable access to the requested services, and are only willing to wait about 2-3 seconds for it. And when that applies to customers, a poor experience on your website can have a direct impact on revenue, reputation and customer loyalty.

How does data centre failover work?

Pulsant supports both traditional network failover protocols and intelligent application load balancing and failover functions, actively monitoring our services while rapidly rerouting the traffic to the healthy locations.

What other features are supported by Data centre Failover services?

Data centre failover can support content delivery network with global and local load balancing across multiple servers or by rerouting traffic to the closest geographical location. Application security can be also enabled on the data centre failover perimeter to additionally secure Pulsant customers.

What is Business Continuity?

Business Continuity Planning is the process of putting in place provisions so that your business operations can continue functioning in the event of downtime or disruption. This can include day to day business activities, yet with so many business operations now dependent on technology, many modern business continuity plans start with IT.

What do you mean by an intelligent cloud platform?

We use the best of traditional and hybrid cloud services to deliver a platform that is agile, secure and compliant, and is matched to your specific requirements.

What are the reasons for using Pulsant Enterprise Cloud instead of a public cloud service, such as AWS or Microsoft Azure?

Why should I choose private over public?

Both cloud models have inherent benefits. While public models tend to be cheaper, private models are ideal for businesses in heavily regulated industries or that have stringent security requirements. At Pulsant we work with our customers to determine which model best suits their needs, whether that’s private, public or a combination.

Will the performance of a private cloud meet my needs?

At Pulsant we ensure your private cloud platform is a dedicated environment, designed to deliver optimum performance while remaining flexible, secure and compliant.

What’s the difference between Azure and Azure Stack?

With Azure, Microsoft’s public cloud, it is possible to create a hybrid environment by connecting Azure with your IT, which allows you to switch between multiple environments. With Azure Stack, you actually run Azure on-premises or in our Pulsant data centre. This enables you to enjoy all cloud benefits from one single familiar environment.

How can my company start using Azure Stack?

We’ve developed Launch Pad, an Azure Stack one node as a service POC. It is a single-node Azure Stack appliance hosted in our data centre. Rolled out in less than a day and accompanied by our services to support you every step of the way.

If I choose AWS, do I need to worry about data sovereignty? Where will my data reside?

Data sovereignty is a key issue, and as such, AWS effectively keeps your data in the region you’ve deployed it, which is made easier with the presence of a number of UK data centres.

What are the reasons for using AWS instead of Pulsant Enterprise Cloud or Microsoft Azure?

Your organisational requirements and objectives will influence which cloud model is best for you. At Pulsant we will work with you to determine which approach is the best fit for those needs, whether that is our Enterprise Cloud, AWS, Azure or a hybrid deployment.

Will public cloud like AWS meet my needs or do I need to invest in private cloud?

AWS and other cloud models are ideal if you are looking for cost-effective, high performing cloud that is easy to scale up or down. You may, however, wish to consider private cloud or even a hybrid model if you cannot (due to regulation or other considerations) host data in a public environment.

I have Antivirus, isn’t that sufficient protection?

Putting Antivirus on a server is only the first step in adequately securing your infrastructure, it should not be considered full protection against all attack vectors. Cloud Protect is an intrusion detection system (IDS) that monitors your network traffic for suspicious activity and issues alerts when such activity is discovered.

Why should we consider cyber attacks a risk to us specifically?

Real-world data shows us that all business regardless of size, sector and reputation will face cyber attack. If you have an Internet-facing device, it will be attacked. It’s question of “when”, not “if”, and the answer is “sooner and more often than you realise”. Having your customers’ data stolen is just as big a threat to your reputation and business with those customers as it would be if you were a household name.

Can I get adequate protection on a minimal IT budget?

Our solutions are subscription based with no CapEx required. With Cloud Protect you only pay for the security you need. Our service operates at a far lower cost than recruiting your own team of security specialists would require.

Am I just paying for expensive software I will never need?

It’s about the level of risk your business is willing to accept. With current compliance regulations and the proliferation of cyber-attack vectors, why would you run an IT department without adequate cyber security in place? It may seem like a silent service and something you pay for that you never use, but when you are under attack and do need it you will be very glad you have it.

Isn’t my existing SIEM adequate?

Are you getting value from your SIEM tool? Does it provide you with visibility across your environment? My business is not a large global brand so why should I worry about a cyber security strategy?

Cyber criminals target businesses of all sizes, in all industries. It’s not just financial institutions or global brands that are being attacked. As a result, every business should have a cyber security strategy to mitigate risk.

Each organisation is different, with different requirements influenced by regulatory and compliance needs. As a result, we work with your organisation to find out which framework best suits your requirements. We then work with you to achieve accreditation and implement the framework.

Microsoft Azure

What’s the difference between Azure and Azure Stack?

With Azure, Microsoft’s public cloud, it is possible to create a hybrid environment by connecting Azure with your IT, which allows you to switch between multiple environments. With Azure Stack, you actually run Azure on-premises or in our Pulsant data centre. This enables you to enjoy all cloud benefits from one single familiar environment.

Private Cloud

What is Private Cloud?

Private Cloud is a bespoke cloud environment dedicated to one organisation. Access to the private cloud is limited to a single organisation and implemented for a defined set of internal users.

Find out more about Private Cloud

What is the difference between Private (single tenant) and Public (multi-tenant) Clouds?

With a Public Cloud (or multi-tenant deployment), multiple customers reside concurrently on the same infrastructure. Whereas with a Private Cloud, only one customer resides on the infrastructure and has access to that instance or environment.

How long does a Private Cloud take to deploy?

The only difference between deploying a private and public cloud set up is the time it takes to build the hardware and deliver the virtualisation. We consider all factors during deployment, including some timescales that may be out of our control, and work with you during the process.

Can I move from Public Cloud to Private Cloud?

Absolutely. We will work with you to develop the best plan, ensuring your requirements are met, there’s no disruption to your business and the migration is carried out seamlessly.

What is the difference between Private Cloud and Pulsant Enterprise Cloud?

Workplace Recovery

What reasons do customers give for invoking your service?

The main situations reported to us by customers are telecoms failures, power failures, building loss and being unable to access their customer site.

How quickly would your recovery site be available to us after receiving our call to invoke?

Disasters can strike at any point without warning, which is why our Workplace Recovery service (WPR) can be invoked at any time, and on a 24/7/365 basis. Our SLA for invocation is just four hours, ensuring that disruption to business operations is minimised as far as possible.

Why is it important to carry out an annual test?

It’s essential to test your ability to transform from normal operation to a business continuity operation if you are faced with a disaster or denial of service. Doing so helps verify your ability to transition as quickly and seamlessly as possible and identify any improvements required. You may want a full customer test or one that involves a subset of your users — it’s up to you. Either way, our specialists will support you and ensure that your WPR plan is fit for your needs.

As a customer, you will be allocated one test day per annum on a day of your choice — we require six weeks’ notice of the test day. This is designed to put our service through its paces by testing how quickly and seamlessly normal operations are resumed following your invocation. The test will take place in normal business hours although, for an additional fee, you can choose another time to suit you. All the services which form part of your WPR service agreement and would be available at the time of a disaster will be available at the time of your test.

Is the workplace recovery plan tailored to my business?

Yes. Our recovery specialists will work with you to design the service, assist in the development of invocation procedures and agree the protocols you need to meet the needs of your identified workplace recovery scenarios.

What happens when other clients try to invoke your service at the same time as us?

This would be extremely unlikely, especially as we have a 150-metre exclusion zone. However, if this does occur, we accommodate requests on a first-come, first-serve basis. Should you find that our workplace recovery centre (WRC) is already in use, we will modify it to accommodate the number of seats you require. If that’s not possible, then we will offer you an alternative centre nearby.

How does your workplace recovery centre connect to our network?

We have a number of options available, depending on what’s the best match for your needs. These include a VPN tunnel, private network or Citrix/RDP.

Will your service link to our telephony systems?

Yes. Our telephony system allows us to build basic automatic call distributor (ACD) so we can give you a full direct dial-in (DDI) to redirect calls into our platform.

What are your current syndication ratio and customer spread?

We operate our service as standard on a syndicated model, whereby customers share each reserved seat. Our maximum syndication ratio is 20:1, although we usually operate at lower ratios than this. Our geographical separation is a minimum of 150 metres so we will not contract with any other customers within 150 metres of your location.

What is provided as standard as part of your workplace recovery service?

We offer the following as standard:
• 10 Mbps bandwidth, although more can be purchased at an additional cost
• VoIP telephony with the functionality to accommodate non-geographic number (NGN) redirection to (DDI), and basic (ACD) functionality
• A 150-metre exclusion zone
• One test day per annum for business continuity rehearsal tests
• A four-hour SLA on invocation
• One PC image capture and storage
