Maidenhead, UK – 22nd February 2021Pulsant, a leading IT infrastructure services provider with a core focus on colocation, cloud and networking, has announced two new appointments to its Executive Leadership team.

Guy Daniels has assumed the position of Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) after joining the company as Interim CMO in September 2020, while April Clark has been promoted to Chief People Officer (CPO) from her role as HR Director.

As CMO, Daniels is responsible for leading Pulsant’s brand and marketing strategy, ensuring the company is positioned strongly to capitalise on the growing demand for digital transformation and edge computing through its national network of data centres and cloud platforms. Daniels’ appointment adds to significant investments Pulsant has made into its sales and marketing capabilities during the last 12 months.

Daniels has more than 30 years’ experience in technology marketing, including positions at IBM and Sony. Before joining Pulsant, Daniels held a number of senior roles in prominent technology companies, including Vice President of Corporate Marketing for Cognizant Technology Services Europe and Vice President Brand and Marketing Communications for Fujitsu International.

“As a permanent member of the Pulsant team, I look forward to building a unique and compelling brand which reflects the clarity of our strategy to the market and helping achieve our growth potential over the coming years. It’s an exciting time for the business, with the company well-positioned to help organisations navigate digital disruption. Most of all, I am genuinely proud to be part of such a high-quality leadership team,” comments Daniels.

As CPO, Clark will lead the strategic and operational delivery of Pulsant’s people, culture and values, ensuring access to, and retention of, the best talent to support Pulsant’s growth and future success. Clark joined Pulsant in 2006 following a role in the HR team at John Menzies Group. Over the past 15 years, she has been instrumental in establishing a strong company culture and has led the successful integration of teams following multiple acquisitions.

“I’m excited to take this next step in my career at Pulsant. The events of the last 12 months have really emphasised the importance of our people to our ongoing success. We’ve continued to thrive despite the pandemic because of our focus on supporting and developing our team. As we look to the future, it will be this emphasis on people, culture and values that will enable us to continue to attract and retain the best people to help us reach our growth potential,” comments Clark.

Rob Coupland, Pulsant CEO, adds: “Both Guy and April bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to Pulsant and their appointments will significantly strengthen our Executive Leadership team and ensure we are positioned for future success. Guy has already made a huge impact on the business and his permanent appointment supports the wider investments we are making in our go-to-market capability to address the opportunity posed by digital transformation and the emerging edge computing opportunity.

“Since joining Pulsant, I have been impressed by the industry-leading best practice April has embedded in Pulsant’s HR agenda over many years and her appointment to CPO reflects the strategically important role our people play in our success as a company.”

Edge Computing

Leading IT infrastructure services provider Pulsant has today announced a significant investment in a new national network enabling edge computing. The network will be facilitated through an agreement with Zayo Group Inc., a global leader in communications infrastructure.

The collaboration will see 10 Pulsant data centres across the UK connected via Zayo’s high-performance fibre network to build a unique digital ecosystem. This will allow clients to access and benefit from connections to the edge, no matter where they are located or where their business takes place.

The £8M investment will create and maintain a high-capacity, low latency and agile network capable of delivering sub 5 millisecond latency to over 95% of the UK population from Pulsant’s sovereign UK data centres. The new network will provide the infrastructure to support the next generation of innovative applications, as businesses look to adopt and deploy distributed multi-cloud strategies.

“At Pulsant we’ve always been committed to supporting the evolving needs of our clients. This collaboration  with Zayo provides a cutting-edge network that will unlock the opportunities of edge computing for many organisations,” said Pulsant CEO Rob Coupland. “Combining our diverse portfolio of data centres and Zayo’s innovative fibre solutions, this unique new network will bring reliable, scalable and high-capacity coverage to businesses across the whole of the UK.”

“Pulsant’s impressive network of data centres serving businesses in every region across the UK will be critical to meet the growing demands of edge cloud traffic,” added Zayo’s Managing Director of Europe,  Jesper Aagaard. “Coupled with Zayo’s unique, low latency fibre network, this digital infrastructure will drive the next evolution of edge computing and bring its benefits to customers.”

For top athletes, finding motivation in circumstances outside of their control is vital. 2020 has forced sportsmen and women to come to terms with the most significant disruption to the worldwide sporting calendar since the Second World War, which has been a challenging, but unavoidable facet of their lives. Athletes affected by the disappointment of the postponement of major events, such as the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, have needed to dig deep to find the motivation to keep on pushing ahead with their punishing training routines.

For the third instalment of our British rowing blog series, we sat down with GB rower Becky Muzerie who opened up about the keys to staying motivated, overcoming motivational dips and what inspires her to succeed.

The power of preparation

Mental preparation is just as important as the physical for success.

For me, self-motivation is simple. It’s all about reminding yourself why you are doing what you do, understanding the great privilege of the opportunity you have and drawing on inspiration from the hard times.

In preparation, finding perspective is all important. As an athlete the many occasions you suffer lows from missing out on selection, or being injured, make the highs of participating in big events all the greater. To fill myself with confidence the night before a race, I often remind myself of all the things I have achieved in the months preparing for the event.

Supporting each other is a great part of the camaraderie of team sports, However, when that support is not available you need to be able to rely on yourself. In our 2018 eight, a teammate who gave motivational speeches before each race provided a tremendous boost in confidence. But sometimes when such support is no longer there you have to leave your comfort zone. This can mean stepping up and taking a leadership role, even if it doesn’t come naturally. This was the case when we later raced without that crew member, which provided an opportunity for me to take up the mantel and spur the crew on before the race, something I’d never been confident enough to do previously.

Many athletes, including myself, often find motivation peaks straight after a big race or event. Following a win or a good performance it is normal to get excited about the next goal and you want to jump straight back into training again. Sometimes it is better to give your body a break and it is always worth making time to review what has happened, good or bad and sitting with that emotion before moving on to the next challenge.

Overcoming adversity

During periods of low motivation, half the battle is just getting a training session started.

Having a routine with quite limited time slots to do training sessions is a great way to overcome motivational dips. You just have to get on with it because it becomes a matter of now or never!

The amount of mental energy it takes to get back on the rowing machine can be exhausting, but you’ll often find that once you begin, it gets easier. It’s like going to the gym or for a run – the thought of getting ready and driving all the way there is the biggest demotivator, but it’s not never as bad once you’re there.

With the Olympics now feeling so very far away, I’ve set short term goals to focus on. This attitude has helped me to keep on taking the next stroke during the long lonely sessions.

If you are feeling low, it is important to remind yourself that training is a choice. Personally, I have chosen to dedicate this period of my life to trying to be the best I can at rowing. You don’t want to look back and have any regrets about skipping sessions when you didn’t need to.

Finding inspiration in sport

Sport is an integral part of a healthy society. On an individual level it is fantastic for our wellbeing, both physical and mental. On a group level it provides a social benefit for people to learn and work with others. And on a national level, sport has a unique power to bring a country together.

I am driven by the idea that I might be able to inspire other people to take a risk and follow their dreams, in or outside of sport. This is what motivates me to push my limits beyond what I thought possible in order to reach my goals.

Afterall, success in sport is just like success in every walk of life – it’s all about striving each and every day to become the best version of yourself.

IT teams across the UK are facing a common struggle. With innovation becoming increasingly vital to helping businesses move forward and compete, IT teams are being pulled in two directions – driving innovation and taking care of the business in an operational capacity.

This dual purpose is having a negative effect on IT personnel and businesses. For IT people, the paradox can lead to stress, anxiety and even burnout. In turn this can lead to feelings of demotivation and even the need to take time out from the business. For businesses it can mean dwindling productive output from the IT team, less reactivity to solving everyday IT issues and slower progress in innovation projects. So what should organisations do?

Download our checklist to understand how you can restore the right balance in your IT department, reducing strain on the team and helping to push your business forward. The checklist outlines the four steps organisations should follow including:

  • Align IT to business strategy and objectives
  • Re-configure your team and skills needed
  • Apply the right technology
  • Keep learning and evolving
